Elizabeth Kelly, MSN, FNP-BC, VACC-BC, conducted an internal clinical workflow evaluation in the Anesthesiology Department at Boston Children’s Hospital, assessing whether a visible, touchless timing tool could support clinicians in consistently adhering to recommended scrub‑the‑hub timing protocols during needleless connector access. This work was presented in the Poster Session at the AVA 2025 Scientific Meeting.
Clinicians reported that touchless activation allowed them to maintain proper technique while using a simple visual cue to reinforce the full 15‑second scrub duration. The timer was noted as easy to incorporate into routine workflows.
The Use of Multiple Methods to Explore the Impact of Interruptions on Intravenous (IV) Push Delivery

This research found that nurses were interrupted during every IV push scenario observed, often multiple times. Interruptions increased cognitive load and made maintaining accurate timing more difficult when relying on mental counting alone.
These findings highlight the value of visible timing cues to support awareness of elapsed time during short, time‑dependent clinical activities.
